The fourteen local area websites (including CPS Direct) reinforce The Crown Prosecution Service commitment to accessibility. The new sites achieve W3C Priority AA accessibility standards. They also reinforce the Crown Prosecution Services commitment to the Freedom of Information Act by making vital reports about the performance of local Crown Prosecution Service areas available to a local audience.
One of the major achievements of the project was ensuring that each area had a unique website that reflected the needs and concerns of the local people while adhering to the national CPS brand and policies. Each area website was built as a standalone project under direction from the communication manager and senior managers of the area concerned. The area websites are powered by the Ecru unique content management system which enables local people to update their own website in an easy and accessible way. The system has been adapted so that people with visual difficulties are also able to manage their own websites.
By adhering to stringent standards set out by the W3C the local area websites also enables The CPS to comply with the implications of the 2010 Equality Act, the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act and the Freedom of Information Act. Ecru have created a website that can be accessed by people with visual, cognitive, hearing and mobility difficulties with excellent design and a professional look and feel. One of the key advantages of this approach is that everyone benefits. Not only is the information easier to find and access for people with disabilities, it is easier to access for everyone.
